I’m Back, Bitches.
It has been more than three years since Scathing Accuracy started, and without getting too sentimental I can honestly say I am proud of every day this site has been running. But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt since August 2008, it’s this;
Climpa cannot write for shit.
I’ve written a few reviews, I’ve contributed some video content and guides, but for the most part I have done very little compared to the others – with the exception of Wiggy – and for that reason I feel like I’ve done a disservice to everyone. That’s not to say I haven’t written things, there are more discarded reviews and blog posts in my recycle bin than I care to think about, but I always get 3/4 of the way through something and put it aside for later only to forget about it due to lack of proper motivation.
When we first set up ScathingAccuracy over 3 years ago, we often talked about how it was going to be our place to just talk about games. Nothing special, no grand ambitions or sinister motives, just some place to do or say whatever we wanted. At some point the concept of putting our own content up here was discussed. I’m not sure why exactly, as none of us have any experience in game development, but regardless it’s something I’ve had in the back of my head ever since. And I mean who hasn’t? Ignoring that it’s horrible to start a sentence with “and”, anyone who responds to that question with “not me” is probably lying through their teeth; Unless they have none, in which case they are lying through their gums.
As mentioned previously, none of us have any experience in game development, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for aspirations right? Over the last few years I’ve picked up and toyed around with several of the more simple engines and amateur game development programs, but a little while back I finally sat down and taught myself how to use Adventure Game Studio using a fantastic series of YouTube videos. There have been a few stops and starts at small projects just to teach myself the basics, and even one or two grander projects that were started and killed off, and ultimately it has always come down to the same reasons, lack of motivation.
But no more, I’m now taking a two birds with one stone approach to casual game development and contributing to ScathingAccuracy. It is my intention to start making an adventure game whilst at the same time chronicling its creation here. The drive to post updates will hopefully motivate me to continue working on the game, and working on the game will hopefully result in me posting something, anything, for ScathingAccuracy. Like a twisted, digital, Ouroboros.Hell, Shepton was even nice enough to set up my own section, so as not to clutter the front page too badly. So while bigger updates will be duplicated or summarised in Blogé, the majority of posts will be there.
Well, that’s it then, I’d best get to work.

Do I be mean yet factual and make fun of a guy for failing like Climpa did? Or, have I or the times changed and it’s come back around where making fun of a guy in this way is lame and compassion reappears instead? I don’t know. Why did I bother to write this? I have other things to do in life and yet I’m wondering about this loser-y Climpa guy and why he didn’t contribute or follow through on practically anything. Eh screw it.
Eh honestly I wish I’d been less of a dick about it when he had this idea. He’d probably have made something cool. I don’t know if he was really ever gonna get into the coding elements though, I’m not sure if programming is really his thing so I suspect that maybe when it reached the point of having to actually do more than just planning and designing, progress might have stopped anyway.
Recently as a side project I started learning C++ and made a basic text adventure game (I’m talking MAD basic, there were five areas and you could only go left and right and collect items and talk/interact with people) and as soon as I got to the point where I wanted to do just a little bit more, the coding became juuust complicated enough that I couldn’t get by just watching random youtube examples any more and I shelved it, so I ain’t gonna judge for this project not going very far almost 15 years ago when learning resources were even more scarce and this kind of thing wasn’t as ubiquitously popular.
I’m considering taking an actual course in C++ or related languages at some point and if I do then you can bet I’ll actually throw something together, and in all honesty Climpa would be the first person I hit up as a sounding board for ideas and concepts.
